What is Chaikin Oscillator?

The Chaikin Oscillator measures the momentum of the Accumulation/Distribution line. That line adds each bar's volume weighted by where the bar closed within its range, so it rises when closes cluster near the highs. The oscillator subtracts a 10-bar exponential average of that line from a 3-bar one and draws the result around a dashed zero line in its own pane.

The Chaikin Oscillator shows whether accumulation or distribution is speeding up. It does not measure trend direction in price, it has no fixed range or overbought and oversold levels, and it is only as reliable as the volume behind it.

How to use Chaikin Oscillator

  • Crossing zero. A move above zero means the fast average of Accumulation/Distribution has overtaken the slow one, so buying pressure is building faster than its recent trend. A move below zero means selling pressure is building.
  • Direction of the line. A rising line shows accumulation gathering pace, a falling line shows it fading, even while the line is still on the same side of zero.
  • Divergence. Price making a new high while the oscillator makes a lower high suggests the move has less buying pressure behind it.
  • The size of the swings. Values are in volume units, so their size depends on the market. Compare a reading with the oscillator's own recent swings, not with another market.

These are ways to read the line, not entry signals on their own.

Settings

SettingDefaultWhat it changes
Fast Length3 Bars in the fast average of the Accumulation/Distribution line. Lower reacts sooner and crosses zero more often. Minimum 1.
Slow Length10 Bars in the slow average. Higher gives a slower baseline and wider swings. Minimum 1.

Adjust both lengths in the indicator settings. Keep the fast length below the slow one, or the reading flips sign.

Calculation

Each bar adds its volume to the Accumulation/Distribution line, weighted by where the close sits between the low and the high. The oscillator compares two exponential averages of that line:

weight = ((close - low) - (high - close)) / (high - low)
         (0 when high = low)
A/D = previous A/D + weight * volume

Chaikin Oscillator = EMA(A/D, 3) - EMA(A/D, 10)

The weight runs from +1 for a bar that closes on its high to -1 for one that closes on its low. A bar with no range contributes nothing.

The Accumulation/Distribution line starts at the first loaded bar, so its own level depends on how much history is on the chart. The oscillator does not: adding a constant to the line moves both averages by the same amount, and it cancels when one is subtracted from the other. Each average is started from the simple average of its first bars. A dashed zero line is drawn for reference.

If the market reports no volume at all, the indicator shows the error No volume is provided by the data vendor instead of a flat line.

Limitations

  • It ignores gaps between bars. The weight only looks at where a bar closed within its own range, so a large move from one close to the next can still read as distribution.
  • It is noisy at the default lengths. A 3 and 10 bar pair reacts quickly and crosses zero often in quiet or ranging markets.
  • Volume quality varies between exchanges. The oscillator is only as good as the volume the exchange reports for that market.
  • The live candle moves. The current bar's value changes until that bar closes.
  • It is not a strategy. On its own it carries no risk management, sizing or exit.

Frequently asked questions

The Chaikin Oscillator is the difference between a 3-bar and a 10-bar exponential average of the Accumulation/Distribution line. It shows whether buying or selling pressure, as measured by where bars close within their range, is building faster than its recent trend.

Above zero, accumulation is building faster than its recent trend; below zero, distribution is. Crosses of zero and divergences between the oscillator and price are the most common readings. The size of the values depends on the market's volume and is only meaningful compared with the oscillator's own history.

Yes. The indicator declares two inputs: Fast Length, default 3, and Slow Length, default 10, both with a minimum of 1. Open the indicator's settings on the chart to change them.

Values on bars that have already closed are not revised. The current bar's value moves while that candle is live and settles when it closes. The averages need a starting point, so loading older history can shift values near the very start of the loaded range.

Both use the same close-within-range weighting of volume. Chaikin Money Flow sums that weighted volume over a window and divides by total volume, giving a bounded reading of how much flow was buying or selling. The Chaikin Oscillator instead measures the momentum of the running Accumulation/Distribution total.
