What is 52 Week High Low?

The 52 Week High Low indicator draws three lines: the highest high and the lowest low of the last 365 bars, and the midpoint between them. On a daily chart that is a year of trading, so the lines show the year's range and where price currently sits within it.

It measures a range that has already happened. It does not predict whether the yearly high or low will hold, and on any timeframe other than 1D it covers 365 bars, not 52 weeks.

How to use 52 Week High Low

  • Price near the high line. Price trading near its 52-week high is at the top of its yearly range, which many traders watch for breakouts.
  • Price near the low line. Price near its 52-week low is at the bottom of its yearly range, watched for breakdowns or for support.
  • The midpoint. Price above the basis is in the upper half of the year's range; below it, the lower half.
  • Flat lines. The high and low lines only move when a new extreme is made or an old one drops out of the window, so a long flat stretch means the range has held.

These are reference levels, not entry signals on their own.

Settings

SettingDefaultWhat it changes
Period365 Bars in the window. 365 is a year on a daily chart because crypto trades every day. On other timeframes it is 365 bars of that timeframe. Minimum 1.

Adjust the window length in the indicator settings. Set it to suit your chart's timeframe if you want a calendar year on anything other than 1D.

Calculation

Over the last Period bars, including the current one:

High = highest high of the last 365 bars
Low = lowest low of the last 365 bars
Basis = (High + Low) / 2

A stock market year has about 251 trading days, but crypto trades every day, so a year of daily bars is 365 and that is the default. The window needs that many bars of loaded history before it covers a full year.

The high is drawn in blue, the low in red and the midpoint in orange.

Limitations

  • It only means 52 weeks on a daily chart. On 4H, 365 bars is about two months; on 1W it is about seven years.
  • It needs long history. The default window needs 365 bars, so on a newly listed market the range is shorter than a year.
  • It steps rather than flows. Lines jump when an old extreme leaves the window, which can look like a change in the market when it is only the calendar moving on.
  • It is not a strategy. The range alone carries no trend filter, risk management or exit.

Frequently asked questions

It draws the highest high and lowest low of the last 365 bars, plus the midpoint between them. On a daily chart that is the range of the past year, which helps you see whether price is near its yearly extremes.

A stock market year has roughly 251 trading days, but crypto markets trade every day of the year. A year of daily crypto bars is therefore 365.

Yes. The indicator declares one input: Period, default 365 with a minimum of 1. Open the indicator's settings on the chart to change it. To see a year on a timeframe other than 1D, set the number of bars that make up a year on that timeframe.

Values on bars that have already closed are not revised. On the current candle, the high and low lines can move while the candle is live if it makes a new extreme, and settle when it closes.
