What is 24-hour Volume?

24-hour Volume adds up the turnover of every bar opened in the 24 hours up to and including the current bar, and draws the total as columns in its own pane. Turnover is each bar's volume multiplied by its close, so the figure is in the market's quote currency, such as USDT. On a 1h chart that is the last 24 bars; on a 15m chart the last 96.

24-hour Volume shows how much trading a rolling day has seen. It does not convert into other currencies, it does not show direction, and it does not work on timeframes above one day.

How to use 24-hour Volume

  • Rising or falling columns. A rising total means the last 24 hours have been busier than the 24 hours before them. A falling total means activity is fading.
  • Jumps and drops. The total jumps when a heavy bar enters and drops by the same amount exactly 24 hours later, when that bar leaves the window. A drop can therefore reflect a busy day ago rather than a quiet now.
  • Comparing with the market's usual activity. The total is in quote currency, so it can be compared with what the market normally trades in a day.
  • Alongside per-bar volume. The Volume indicator shows when trading happened within the day; 24-hour Volume shows the size of the day as a whole.

Read it together with price. On its own it shows activity, not direction.

Settings

SettingDefaultWhat it changes
Price SourceClose The price each bar's volume is multiplied by to turn it into turnover. Other prices, such as hl2 or hlc3, are also available. Has no effect while volume_in_quote is on.
volume_in_quoteOff Turn on for markets whose volume is already reported in the quote currency. Volume is then summed as reported, without multiplying by price.

Adjust both in the indicator settings.

Calculation

Each bar's turnover is its volume multiplied by the price source. The indicator then sums the turnover of every bar opened within the last 24 hours:

turnover   = volume * close
(volume as reported when volume_in_quote is on)

24h volume = sum of turnover for bars opened after
             (current bar's open time - 24 hours)

The window is measured by time, not by a number of bars, so it adapts to whatever timeframe the chart is on. The sum is kept as a rolling total, adding the new bar and removing those that have aged out.

Early in the loaded history there is less than 24 hours behind a bar, so the first values are partial totals of what has loaded. A bar with no reported volume counts as zero. On a 1D chart the window holds a single bar, so the value equals that day's turnover.

Above a daily timeframe the indicator shows the error 24-hour Volume needs a chart timeframe of 1 day or less instead of a value. If the market reports no volume at all, it shows The data vendor doesn't provide volume data for this symbol.

Limitations

  • It needs a timeframe of 1D or less. On weekly or other higher timeframes it shows an error rather than a misleading total.
  • It is coarse on high timeframes. On 4h the window holds six bars, so the total moves in large steps. Lower timeframes give a smoother rolling figure.
  • Units depend on how the exchange reports volume. The default assumes volume in the base currency and multiplies by price. If the market already reports quote volume, turn volume_in_quote on or the figure will be far too large.
  • It counts whole bars. The window is built from bar open times, so it moves in steps of one bar and can differ slightly from a 24h figure measured to the second.
  • It is not a strategy. On its own it carries no risk management, sizing or exit.

Frequently asked questions

It shows the total turnover of the trailing 24 hours at each bar, built by adding up the chart's own bars. By default each bar's volume is multiplied by its close, so the figure is in the quote currency.

Above a daily timeframe a single bar already covers more than 24 hours, so there is no way to build a 24-hour total from the chart's bars. The indicator shows the error 24-hour Volume needs a chart timeframe of 1 day or less rather than plotting a wrong number.

Yes. The indicator declares two inputs: Price Source, default close, and volume_in_quote, off by default, for markets whose volume is already reported in the quote currency. Open the indicator's settings on the chart to change them.

No. Each bar's total covers the 24 hours up to that bar and is not revised once the bar closes. The current bar's total grows while that candle is live. Values at the very start of the loaded history are partial, and change if older history loads behind them.

Volume shows each bar's own volume, in the units the exchange reports. 24-hour Volume converts each bar to turnover and adds up a rolling 24 hours of it, giving a daily total that updates on every bar.
